Clean With Me: Part 2

Today, I’d like to share a simple, but effective “scrubbing” cleaner that I’ve used for years. I know you have some in your baking supplies, or maybe in your fridge. Possibly, with the pool cleaners. Can you guess?

This wonder powder scrubs, shines, cleans, deodorizes, balances… You name, it probably does it. (Oh yeah, it lightens up your sourdough baked goods as well!)

And, yes, I buy it in bulk!

It’s BAKING SODA!! (Did you guess correctly?!)

Let’s talk about how I use this when cleaning around my home….
A light sprinkle is all you need on most surfaces that require a bit more “elbow grease.” This gets rid of the hard water and soap scum in the tub and around the sink. Cleans pots and pans. Scours and freshens the toilet bowl. This is safe enough for the kids to use and a must have for potty training (kids or pets!) Plus, it’s much better for your lungs than the harsher cleaning chemicals!

To make it easier on yourself….
Next time you buy the sprinkle container of Parmesan, be sure to save the lid. (We don’t buy this often, so I always to keep the lid for fun uses!) Screw the green lid onto a regular mouth Mason jar and, Voila! You have a DIY Sprinkle container.

Now, let’s get to work….

Baking Soda E.O. Scrub
All you need, really is baking soda and a bit of water. Make a paste and scrub. Then, rinse.
But, I like to “fancy” it up by adding several drops of essential oils. They mix in fairly well, but you do need to use a stirrer to combine the oils and the baking soda.
It’s really that simple!

Cost Breakdown:

  • A 15 lb. bag at Sam’s cost around $8.00. For every 1 pound of baking soda, you get 2 cups or 1 pint. So a 15 pound bag has the potential to make 30 pint jars. Each jar would then cost about $0.26.
  • The mason jars and parm lid are things I have on hand, so I will consider those free. (The jar shown above is a re-purposed coconut oil jar.)
  • When I add essential oils, I use about 10 drops of each oil. Each oil shown above would be about $0.50 for those 10 drops, and about $1.00 combined.

My cost for this multi-purpose scrubbing cleaner is about $1.26!! And I saved 2 things from the trash pile.
