We are hours away from actually, finally starting our massive renovation project in our new home. But, before we could start this monumental task, we had to get the puppies out of our house and into their own….
My very handy hubby whipped up a plan for a large, insulated dog house inside a fenced-in area. It took a few weekends of dedicated work, but was well-worth the time, effort and costs!
DIY Dog House With Gated Fence
First, he started with building the frame for the dog house. The boards along the floor of the house were re-purposed from the playground.
After putting up the walls for the house, he added caulk and insulation….
The next day, he trimmed more of the recycled playground wood to make the siding of the dog house. The roof was also from the playground! (We love to reuse things & save money!!)
At this point, we only had one puppy willing to even go near the construction site. Our sweet, spoiled little lady pup wanted nothing to do with that place!
Then, holes were dug, posts were set and concrete was added. Nathan enlisted some helpers for installing the fencing. It was a whole family affair. (The family who works together, stays together!!)
Of course, once the fence was up, I made him stand in front of his handy work for a picture! He did such a great job!! (I will be expanding my honey-do-list…haha!!)
The very last step was to add a fence gate, complete with self- closing hinges, a latch and handle.
We also had to convince the puppies to go into the kennel…. Big “dinosaur” bones helped with this!
This dog house turned out so well! We put food, water, their blankies and Coolaroo bed inside the kennel. The dogs seem to be adjusting well and have not barked all night as we thought they may. We have had very mild temperatures lately to ease them into this transition. (And have plans to bring them in if the weather is unbearably cold!)
We do have the drawings to scale that we are willing to share, but they have been packed up for the kitchen reno. Please let me know if you are interested & I’ll get them to you as soon as I can!
